Inspired by the “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, this performance was channeling the unknown world of the spirits for the audience. Performed in the 80s, a few VHS videos have surfaced that Have inspired me and my collaborator Linda Tolbert to fashion into a new form. I am seized by the concept of reworking old ideas and trying to make something new. Now it is common for everybody to capture their performances in exquisite detail and share them with the world, or at least the Internet. Current technology and access to it are inspiring me to reinvent and revisit old ideas. I fantasize about not only sharing the past but also interpreting it with today’s eyes. Broke artists in the past didn’t get as much attention as they do now. Film was expensive, and personal video cameras were not around. (So jealous of the creators that currently have this plethora of devices at their disposal!) So here I go, learning how to use these tools. So here goes tackling a new trick for an “old dog”. I should say “Wolf”. After all, if my name is Animal, I can choose which one I am!
Linda Tolbert edited and helped produce this experiment. The various photos and videos used here were probably from Toronto, Baltimore, or Omaha. I think the pic on the bottom left is by Ken Warren. Please let me know if anybody wants to add to any credits. I feel strongly that I create the original artwork, and cameramen or a photographer then record it for posterity. As they have included my art in theirs, I feel I should be able to do the same in my current art practice. I definitely want to acknowledge and include these sometimes unknown people in credits. After all, we are doing this because we love to create.
